This was our 5th annual SU IL Kid's Fishing Derby and this year the weather was perfect. Thankfully, there were a lot of salmon in the harbor, so a few kids caught some quality fish. But this isn't just about fishing, this is a free party at the lake for families of all kinds, rich and poor and a chance for Salmon Unlimited members to share their love and respect for Lake Michigan with an enthusiastic group of young anglers. Our lake has its share of issues but with a caring core of citizens that have the lakes best interest in mind, most of the lakes hurdles can be jumped and resolved, but it will probably take decades, so we have to have our kids carry on our mission. Based on the kids attitudes I witnessed at this derby, I'm sure we'll be leaving it in good hands.
To everyone that showed up with kids to fish, thank you. There's nothing worse than throwing a party that nobody shows up to. We had 120 smiling contestants, that's pretty darn good.
To all the SU volunteers, you and our sponsors truly have a heart of gold, good on ya!
All the Best,
Salmon Unlimited of Illinois
The Salmon Unlimited Kid's Derby is an open fishing derby for kids up to 18 years of age. Our goal is to introduce fishing as a fun and constructive way to spent quality time outdoors, with family and friends. By promoting responsible management of our natural resources to today's young people, we hope to foster a sense of stewardship for the environment. We believe it is very important for children to enjoy the fishing experience in a safe environment, as they learn to appreciate the sport and the opportunities it provides. With emphasis on the concepts of catch & release, selective harvest and ethical sportsmanship, we hope all participants will learn to become advocates for the lake and the fishery.
Don't miss the chance to spend a day in the fresh air and sunshine with your children (or even grandchildren). Join us at our annual Salmon Unlimited Kids Fishing Derby. There will be lots of prizes for the kids, free lunch and drinks for everyone, and plenty of fish stories, too. All children under the age of 16 MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No fishing experience is necessary, and volunteers will be on-hand to assist the kids (and adults) throughout the event.
